Mark your calendars with a giant unicorn riding a bicycle over a rainbow, for it is almost time for Cirque du SoGay VIII!
CdSG is a bicycle scavenger hunt of queer-friendly people and places. Riders start and end at the same point, and there are queer destinations in between. How you execute your route is up to you! Do all the stops or just the ones you want. No need to be the fastest (unless you want to be!) Prize categories will be decided by the wonderful community organizations supporting the ride this year. Following the ride is an awards ceremony with entertainment and aforementioned prizes of all types.
I think my friend Aaron described it to someone pretty well last night - "girl, this is not your typical race, it's a *celebration*. can you put a condom on a dildo? You win a prize. Throw some beanbags into a butt, win a prize. Is your outfit cute? Win a prize."
Of course he was speaking generally but, yes, there are lots of prizes for lots of things.
As always there will be a harder & faster route, as well as a novice route. Come race, or come to learn new things and make new friends.
Schedule at a glance:
3pm assemble in alley behind Full Cycle 3515 Chicago Ave S
4pm GO TIME
6:45pm-ish checkpoints close
7pm arrive at finish line - Cafe SouthSide/The Exchange Minneapolis!
7:30/8ish prizes, performance, etc
9ish go home to rest OR make out with the hott person/s you picked up on the ride
Q&A
Q: How long is the ride?
A: The shorter route is no more than 15 miles and the longer route is 25+ miles.
Q: Is there a cost?
A: We ask for a suggested donation of $10 or $5 with a donation to the Exchange Food shelf. (Make sure your donation is not past its expiration date!) FREE for Nice Ride Neighborhood participants.
Q: How do I Pre-register?
A: Visit http://www.queerbikes.org/cdsg/registration. Complete the waiver and follow the prompts to check out via PayPal.
Q: Should I bring anything?
A: Please bring a pen, water, bike lock, lights and a helmet if you have them. You may wish to bring a snack. We will provide you with a map, but you may want a more detailed one if you are unfamiliar with the area. If you are able to perform basic repairs, bring equipment to do so, but don’t worry as there will mobile repair during the ride and tune-ups at the start line.
Q: Is there an age requirement? 18+? 21+?
A: Riders over 16 must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian. Any riders under 16 must ride with a parent or guardian over the age of 18. 18+ go crazy because you are legally an adult. You still have to sign a waiver though.
Booze?
The after party space is all ages and will be alcohol free. We seek an alcohol-free space in order to be welcoming of youth and those in recovery, as well as to steer clear of problematic ID situations for gender non-conforming and transitioning individuals. If you are of the legal age and wish to imbibe off the premesis, you are welcome to do so. (I believe the closest watering hole is East Lake.)
Q: Are allies welcome?
More Q: Please ask yourself the following questions: Am I going to celebrate queerness and/or was I invited by a queer person who is going? Am I able to respect queer space, including recognizing my own privilege and stepping back as necessary? Can I commit to not assuming others’ identities, ask for preferred names and pronouns, and admit fault if I make a mistake?
A: If you answered “yes” to all of these questions you are more than welcome! If you still feel iffy about taking up space, you are certainly welcome to volunqueer and cheer on riders; see below for details.
More Qs? We have more As! Ask away.
