The indomitable "warrior spirit" of the Filipino people persevered despite being under oppressive eras, foreign and domestic ruling powers, that resulted in resistance through various uprising and revolutions. Throughout this history, this fighting spirit transformed it's warrior arts to what is now known as Kali, Eskrima and Arnis (FMA - Filipino Martial Arts). Art of Resistance will introduce the movement and uses of an array of weaponry utilized in these skirmishes, and discussing the hero's practicality and the wielders martial skill in direct proportion to a people's survival and fight for independence.
Join us with Nate Defensor and Chris Diño of Defensor Method of Kali-Eskrima Academy of Chicago and Edie Mesina of Kampilan Eskrima for this lively discussion from a historical perspective and a teach-in of the destructive movements of Filipino martial arts. To wrap up this event, our special guest, Raven Guerrero of the Bagwis Collective will take us home and introduce and connect recent struggles to our deep and rich history of resistance.
