For the fourth installment of the Her Environment series our theme is Dream Machines. Dreams and Machines both share the mechanics of repetition. Machines externalize physical labor and dreams externalize our internal labor both through the means of repetition. Our subconscious minds read into objects, people, and ideas and repurpose them to expose new meanings. Within feminist art practice machines can be used as a means of critiquing systems of labor and production. Dreams provide a subversion of utilitarian ideals by existing in the realm of the impossible. Mika Rottenburg and Ramadios Varo work with visual language of machinery to express ideas about the impossible and the absurd. We are looking for work that uses utilitarian and mechanical structures towards impossible and absurd ends.
Her Environment is the curatorial project of artists Allie Shyer and Chelsea Welch. It began in Winter of 2015 after many conversations which lead us to realize there was no space for feminine spectrum artists working in new media to show their work that was challenging, intentional and encouraging of experimentation. Our focus is broadening the understanding of how New Media practices can be used in multiple forms of art making, from video to installation and performance, our aim is to show pieces that challenge how new media can be used, and the male dominated culture that surrounds it.
