We have a special treat for you tonight, with indie-rock band MOTHERS paying us a visit all the way from Athens, GA. MOTHERS began in 2013 as the solo project of visual artist Kristine Leschper. A self-taught songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Leschper’s earliest musical influences span a great swath of early aughts rock and folk, such as INTERPOL, SUFJAN STEVENS, JAONNA NEWSOM, THE MICROPHONES, and Athen's legend NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL; she later developed a love for experimental music, math rock, and noise artists, including LIGHTING BOLT, HELLA and TERA MELOS. After playing a slew of solo shows over the course of 2014 and gaining local acclaim, Leschper she knew that in order to reach her true musical vision, she would need to expand the line-up, so she recruited musicians from other local bands and the new group quickly recorded their debut full-length album at Chase Park Transduction in Athens (R.E.M, ANIMAL COLLECTIVE, OLIVIA TREMOR CONTROL) over the winter of 2014. MOTHERS released that creation, titled When You Walk a Long Distance You Are Tired, earlier this year, and we are pumped as all get-out to hear these epic tunes in person. Direct support tonight comes from Hudson Valley, NY band PALM, who have been described as “Quadratic equation rock performed by malfunctioning, sputtering appliances”. The now Philadelphia-based fractal-rock quartet ounds are improvisational while being rooted in utter precision. On their debut, Trading Basics, guitar parts deconstruct themselves in real time; bass lines dart and duck; drums propel the action while also seeming to comment on it. Vocalist-guitarists EVE ALPERT and KASRA KURT'S vocal harmonies add more tension to this outfit's heady mix. Opening this local rock/graze/pop trio BASEMENT FAMILY are returning to THE EMPTY BOTTLE. These guys manage to be catchy as hell with musical moments of garage rock, fuzz distortion. Their like, the band version of the really popular water polo player who wears button ups but also smokes weed and thrashes on the electric guitar. Get it? You can bop your skull along to their catchy beats, but also feel edgy and relevant! SCORE.
