On Tuesday the 2nd of June, The School of House - the new Dutch education platform for the Dance industry – organizes a Masterclass and Showcase in Chicago, with leading Dutch and American DJs and dance professionals. Dutch Dance: creative industry and cultural export product
In the Netherlands Dance has become a leading economic and entertainment business. Although mainly DJs are spotlighted by the media, Dance is a very diverse and thriving creative industry, in which many thousands - mostly young - entrepreneurs, freelancers and employees are active. The Amsterdam startup The School of House, an educational platform initiated by Jan Maarten Hartong, reflects the versatility, professionalism and DIY spirit within the Dutch Dance culture.
Additionally Dance is a major cultural export product, which is rather unique in the history of Dutch popular music, where international trends and fashions were mostly followed, not created. America, and Chicago in particular, is the cradle of House music - and thus indirectly spurred all current Dance or Electronic Dance Music sub-genres. Yet, the popularity of Dance in the US is still lagging behind its tremendous success in The Netherlands. Dutch DJs and organizers, notably Amsterdam based market leader ID&T (Tomorrowland, Mysteryland and Sensation), play a prominent role in the current mainstream breakthrough of Dance in America.
Within the fore mentioned context Dance is included in the program of the forthcoming Dutch trade mission. It is noteworthy to mention that the Royal Couple are Dance music aficionados, as has been illustrated by the requested performance by DJ Armin van Buuren during the coronation festivities of King Willem-Alexander in 2013.
Masterclass and Showcase by The School of House
The Masterclass by The School of House is staged with selected speakers and video footage, followed by a panel discussion. The session consists of three successive topics: Legacy, Industry, Future. The first part, Legacy, is homage to the House that Chicago built, and an overview of what this sound has unleashed in the Netherlands. In the following part, Industry, the current state of affairs within the international Dance industry is covered. In the concluding part, Future, opportunities and possibilities for the Dutch in the US and vice versa are discussed. The Masterclass will be attended by selected guests from the Dance and creative industries, but can be followed live on a large screen for those interested.
Start: 17h. local time.
After the Masterclass it is time to party! DJs from the Netherlands and Chicago who were part of the panel session will perform together to celebrate the transatlantic unity. A part of the Pritzker Pavilion is reserved to invited guests, but the showcase is free and open to everyone who is up for a good time!

The School of House verenigt Nederlandse Dance cultuur met Chicago.
