About the Book:
In THE TOLERANCE TRAP: How God, Genes, and Good Intentions are Sabotaging Gay Equality (NYU Press; June 3, 2014), Suzanna Danuta Walters argues that the gay rights movement has settled for a watered-down goal of tolerance rather than a robust claim to full citizenship, civil rights, and inclusion. Walters writes, “Most gays and their allies believe that we are almost there: we can see the end of the tunnel, where a rainbow world of warm inclusion awaits us.” Walters cuts through these illusions to expose the truth about how far we still need to go to imagine and create a more just world.
Questioning our assumptions at every turn instead of polemicizing, Walters’ provocative book asks whether gay marriage is really the brass ring of equality, and reminds us of the stubborn persistence of anti-gay hatred. She challenges the “born this way” ideology, which roots civil rights in biology, and the “God made me this way” framework, used by both gay rights activists and anti-gay activists to make arguments for equality or against it. And at a time when gay public figures have made coming out seem “so last year,” she points out the continuing force of the closet in every facet of American life.
